Charlyn & Kevin, a preview

Even though it was raining so hard on the drive up that we could barely see the road, and even though thunder rumbled over our heads as we started up the trail and hikers coming down warned of hail, we climbed as high as we could anyway, telling stories and wishing for cheeseburgers.

It was like we'd walked into a story—the kind of story where, for a long time, everything is

dark and scary and sad

and then finally, the weather shifts:

blue sky unrolls over the mountains

and you remember what it feels like to stand in the sun

and you know, right down deep in your bones, that love is stronger than fear and that hope is never truly lost.
