Charlyn & Kevin, Mount Rainier

Even though it was raining

so hard on the drive up that we could barely see

the road,

and even though thunder rumbled over

our heads as we started up the trail,

and hikers coming down warned of hail, we climbed

as high as we could, anyway, telling stories

and wishing for cheeseburgers.

It was like we'd walked into a story—

the kind of story where, for a long time,

everything is dark and scary,

and then, finally,

the weather shifts—

 blue sky unrolls

over the mountains,

and you remember

what it feels like to stand in the sun,

and you know, right down deep

in your bones,

that love is stronger than fear, and hope

is never truly lost.

"When we fight, we always

end up laughing."

"I let her win

most of the time."

"That’s because

I’m mostly right, babe."

"In the beginning we’d say,

'Are you tired of me yet?'

And we’d say, 'Not really.'

And we’d say, 'Are you sure?'

"And we'd say,

'I'm sure.'"
